  I think her older sister might actually be a genius that was held back by the circumstances she was put in. Honestly teaching yourself how to read with no foundation is unbelievable and then to teach another person. Its just amazing but also sad.

  Hoarding mental illness rarely occurs in isolation, most come along with a whole slew of maladaptive and abusive behaviors. It&apos;s not uncommon to attempt to hoard people in a way, including children and partners. It&apos;s a cult of secrecy. <br><br>I appreciate all the coverage this topic gets. If you see something, say something. People forced to live in hoarding conditions are likely being abused in other ways too. <br><br>No one spoke up for my siblings and me when we were children. Other adults knew, but were either enabling the hoarding parent or didn&apos;t want to make it their business. We were too ashamed to tell anyone and trained to keep the secret. No one deserves to live like that.

  Once I&apos;ve heard that when you grow up with an abusive parent and the other doesn&apos;t intervene, you grow up with two abusive parents, and that changed how I saw my childhood situation forever. It&apos;s awful what she went through, and I surely know what it feels like to be in a &quot;home cult&quot;; it&apos;s a very invisible type of struggle to get out of this mindset, and it&apos;s so, so important to talk about. I hope she gets to live the most amazing life; this interview speaks for a ton of silenced victims

  &quot;the intent doesn&apos;t matter, the action does.&quot; THANK YOU for saying that. when i was a kid, i went through a traumatic experience with a family member that had nothing to do with attraction. but much like Mae, my child self interpreted it as a violation and grew up terrified of it happening again or escalating to something worse. it brought me little to no comfort to find out that it was a result of that person being drunk -- it still happened.<br><br>this has been such an eye opening conversation. thank you so much to Mae for being willing to share her story (and to this channel for interviewing her). i&apos;m so glad she&apos;s out of that situation and i wish her the very best.

  Mae, did doctors/nurses ever notice how unkept and medically neglected you were?<br><br>Edit: She just answered. Medical professionals are mandated reporters. People failed her and her sister.

  Thank God her mother finally saw the light and got her out of there. Your poor sister was so brainwashed at 26 that she couldn’t leave your father. I hope she has gotten some help.

  Interesting how the “head of the house” referred to the Bible to justify him being in charge yet the Bible says for the head of the family to serve and sacrifice for their wives. It didn’t sound like he was actually following the Bible at all. HE should have been out there working, providing for his family. As a Christian, I hate when people use the Bible (out of context and incorrectly) to justify their evil behavior.
