Old guy here. I bought one. New. Circa ‘92. Traded it for a 100 series. One of the few decisions in my life that I could taser myself for making.

What's great about Ahmed is that he tells it like it is. . . the good, the bad and the ugly.

The price and popularity of these here in Australia is insane. Especially the diesel models

Biggest problem is you Americans didn’t get the 1HZ, 1HD-T and 1HD-FT models. Far superior to petrol versions for reliability, my 93 HDJ-80 has 600,000kms on the clock is making 200hp.

When I take my daily driver '97 80 to the Phoenix monthly Land Cruiser off-road club meeting, I see the guys driving the 40's and 60's and I think to myself, now those are old. :-)

I’ve daily driven a JDM (right hand drive) ‘94 FZJ80 for the past five years. It’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Has it leaked oil? Yes. Did I rebuild the knuckles? Yes. Has it ever not started or left me stranded anywhere? No. These trucks do require a good bit of maintenance to be in “tip top” shape, but the blessing of them, is if you can’t do it right now, it’s ok. It’s still going to get you where you need to go until you can do it. Toyota built these to last 30-years in third-world countries.

I will add, it pays dividends to be mechanically knowledgeable. It is a thirty year old truck. But, they’re simple and easy to work on.

I had owned Landcruiser's for the past 18 years. I have a 96 and 97. doing head gasket on my 1996. Its got 292k. My 1997 had headgasket done at around 100k. Now I am at just under 255k and Valve guilds are starting to leak. These trucks are very over built. just like anything stuff does need to be replaced but it will never leave your stranded. maintenance is key . anything fluids or rubber related will need to be replaced. One other thing is these engines are rebuildable up to 3 times. you can order 3 different sizes of pistons for these engines. not many engines that can be fully serviceable for up to 3 engine rebuilds on the original block. That sold me.
