How I wish I could go back there again — to that sand, to my tent, to my friends. I thought I would finish the Marathon des Sables, tick that box, be proud of it for the rest of my life, and that would be it. But it turned out to be something completely different. When I was standing at the start of the final stage, knowing that by the evening I would be sleeping in a hotel, in a clean bed, taking a shower and eating normal food in a restaurant, I suddenly felt sadness. Of course, we all wanted to finish. But at that very moment I realized I was sad because all of it was coming to an end. And at the finish line of that stage, this feeling became even stronger: I understood that some incredible fairy tale, which I had been a part of all these days, was ending. I miss the desert, our tent, my friends, and the whole atmosphere of this race. During these days, I met so many people who spoke the same language. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russia — we understood each other without many words and were ready to help one another at any moment: on the course, in the camp, in the tent, or simply by being there. But besides that, I also met so many people from all over the world: New Zealand, England, Australia, South Africa, France, Serbia, China, Japan, and many, many other countries. We spoke different languages, but we smiled at each other and still understood the most important thing: sport, overcoming yourself, mutual support, and simple human warmth are stronger than any borders. And it seems to me that if more people could go through a race like this at least once — through this desert, this exhaustion, this helping each other, and this real friendship — there would be less desire in the world to fight one another. All nine nights I spent in the desert, I was happy. Every single second.
I did not know that something like this was possible at 52. It was the kind of happiness we felt as children, when everything around us was real, simple, and beautiful.Maybe this is the most important thing this race gave me. I know I will come back. I really want to come back. And I will definitely return again.
It was the greatest adventure of my life.
From Russia with love.

The 40th Edition/270 km's was a phenomenal journey for myself and met amazing individuals along the way. My tent buddies made it all even better - as did the water/ice/soup/lemons/oranges along the stages. This movie and anything in relation to the MDS Legendary is always great to watch/listen to. I mean, from volunteers to medical staff - it was truly awesome and worth everything I personally put into it. I cried/laughed/high-fived and honestly found new meanings to certain things in my life. I would most certainly do this event again as they were correct when they mentioned we would miss it all - I miss everything BUT - the memories are something no-one can take away and very precious indeed.

From Russia with love.
