Goddards is a reminder of what can be done with wealth when it is invested in a more informed way than the large McMansions of today. There are many skilled crafts men and women still capable of producing such work in this country, let's give them a job.

I'm one of the housekeepers who helps take care of Goddards. It's such a wonderful bit of architecture, and it's a privilege to help maintain it. I feel that the design of Goddards manages well to maintain a very homely and welcoming atmosphere despite being a relatively large house.

I would encourage anyone to take a look at The Landmark Trust's other properties too, as they are all equally fascinating and well restored.

Thank you HENI for being so respectful on your filming days, the final video is excellent.

“Ned” Lutyens was the master of English 20th century Arts and Crafts architecture.. Dan Cruikshank is a highly regarded, much loved architectural historian and author. I have learned so much him.

I remember first being struck by Arts and Crafts in my mid-teens long ago when I came across books of William Morris patterns. There is still no style that moves my heart as much as this - houses, gardens, handcrafts. Morris is still one of my life's idols. If I won the lottery I'd still build a house and garden in this style. Surely there are ways to create a modern form of it! I did manage once to visit Hvittrask and Gallen-Kallela's house in Finland, similar styles though smaller scale. Thanks for this lovely film.

I first discovered the work of Edwin Lutyens in my late teens, and was immediately captivated by his style. His buildings were the perfect setting for the rest of the Arts and Crafts movement. From private houses in Surrey, to public buildings in Delhi, they all reflected craftsmanship, confidence and timeless design. Where is his equal today?

Was this level of craftsmanship locally available or were specialists imported? The brickwork is breathtaking, the woodwork is completely masterful...Amazing. Thanks.

It all boils down to proportions - the essence of harmony.

I have admired the exterior of Goddards in architecture books. My impression of the interior is mixed enthusiasm. The original rooms seem narrow, and the massive architecture is almost oppressive. The entry is pinched for space, and the door opens into a too-narrow corridor. I can understand why the mirrored bays and a larger bed-and-bath suite had to be added for family use.

Truly great work as a carpenter i always lament the fact there is never a tradesmans name remembered and i know for fact the architects rely heavily on their experience
