The 20th Century "dreadnought" was modeled on centuries-old naval warfare. They had an "armor belt" designed to protect the ship against an enemy broadside from relatively close range. The ships couldn't survive a barrage of plunging fire, accurately aimed. HMS Hood was the first "capital ship" of the war to fall victim to it. KMS Bismarck ended up being Number Two.

The WW2 radar situation wasn't as simple as "We have it and the enemy doesn't." Japan and Germany had radar. Ours was better, but more to the point, it was miniturized so that aircraft and destroyers and PT boats could be equipped with it. Having a one or two year technological advantage meant everything.
