(A) The Companion Cavalry did NOT charge head-on! The 'Hammer and Anvil' tactics taught by Philip II of Macedon dictated that the infantry with their massed pikes (sarissas) were the Anvil and the cavalry were the Hammer! The Companion Cavalry would ride around to the enemy's rear, while the infantry would hold them in place. Once in position, the cavalry would smash into the rear of the enemy, routing them!<br>(B) The Cataphracts were the direct descendents of the Companion Cavalry. While the companion cavalry left the horses unarmored, so that the horses could quickly flank enemies, the Cataphracts had to deal with increased missile deadliness and so the horses and their riders became far more heavily armoured, such that they could now survive direct head-on charges!
