What makes this even sadder is when Jones, a 26 year old medical student, became permanently stuck, rescuers let him talk to to pregnant wife by walkie talkie to say goodbye. And he's still in there today. Horrific & very preventable tragedy. One sign or warning markings would've changed everything.

Try this VR while laying under your bed.
Standing in an open room doesn't do it justice.

The best thing about caving is that you don't have to do it.

Brandon narrates this game and was one of the rescuers who tried to save John. His other videos about the rescue and the cave itself are absolutely fascinating

It's cool to compare this to Brandon Kowalis (the narrator in the game, who was also one of the rescuers and the last person to see John Jones alive) when he did narrated showings of the cave in the game. He makes it look like nothing - He knows exactly where he is, where he's going, he's confident in every move and even pauses to narrate in the middle of the tight squeezes where you can't breathe. You can tell how comfortable he is caving and that to him Nutty Putty really is beginner-level stuff - He's less scared of the cave than my coworkers are of their bosses (mine is chill).

This is much closer to how a normal viewer would feel exploring the cave. He gets lost, he's scared, he struggles to get through difficult passages and he has to use pitons and such to get through, and he actually shows the joy of exploring and discovering stuff.

Oh, and also, at 21:21 where he freaks out and struggles to back out - That's exactly where he used as an example of what John Jones might have felt. Coming to a dead end, struggling to get out, panicking and fearing suffocation. He pointed out in real life you can't just teleport your chest through your legs to turn around, so you have to back out blind, and then if you're John your feet hit the ceiling and you can't bend your knees to get out.
So in that moment, for a few seconds of genuine fright, I think Keyin came closer to understanding what the man felt than the vast majority of people ever will.

The passage at 23:20 is called "The Scout Eater". Make of that what you will.

I can’t imagine and don’t want to imagine the fear panic and sheer terror this young man must of felt knowing he had no way out but I can’t understand why you would go head first in to a space of no more then 10 to 12 inches. Hope he’s a peace now and my condolences to his loved ones and friends

R.I.P to the man John Jones (1983-2009) who died after being trapped in this cave for 27 hours upside down.

I'm feeling fearfully claustrophobic watching somebody else virtually explore the site of somebody else's final exploration. Spelunkers are built different.
