  My Asian family wouldn&apos;t have been cool with them living together &nbsp; It&apos;s crazy that they are ok with that if they stick to those traditions

  I don&apos;t usually comment, but this struck a chord, especially being a Chinese American who was also born and raised in crazy San Francisco. The cost of living is absolutely a factor, and the dowry price being asked is insane. Dowries are outdated, coming from past practice where marriage was a transaction. If they&apos;re talking about keeping tradition, how about having concubines or continuing patriarchy (extremely prevalent still today in Chinese culture)? Not all traditions are worth keeping.

  My Chinese friend ignored her disapproving parents marriage requirements and she was ghosted by her dad forever. Her dad was rich too and thought he was a King. Would you marry into a rich family and do their bidding? &nbsp;You are not marrying your MIL or FIL. You don&apos;t want them controlling your marriage so stand up for your rights. Throw the tea into the harbor. You have to stop those bad spending traditions and move on for the sake of the next generation.

  Im congolese and my husband is french. He also had a bride price / dowry to pay. Beforehand, I went to my family and explained to them that if he&apos;s going to do it, out of love to me, they had to be reasonable in what they were asking, and take into account that it isn&apos;t his tradition. <br><br>They ended up asking a tenth of what is usually asked and my husband gladly paid that dowry.
