  I had a significant moment in my high school science class when one of my African American students was thrilled when he realized that the original humans were black skinned, especially when I followed up by saying “Yes, we white people are the mutants”! &nbsp;I thought that it was a shame that, as a black person, he had to wait until high school to learn that scientific fact, when it , apparently, was so uplifting to his self esteem.

  Mind absolutely blown that the extreme fair skin we see in northwestern Europe is only 6,000 to 8,000 years old. Learning that it was accelerated by the agricultural revolution and a sudden drop in dietary vitamin D makes so much sense, yet I&apos;ve never heard anyone explain it that way before. Brilliant video.

  One of the most fascinating parts of human evolution is that skin color was never about superiority. It was an adaptation to different levels of sunlight, balancing protection from UV damage with the need to produce enough vitamin D. Evolution optimized for survival, not appearance.
