In 2015 and 2017 ITTF adjusted the materials and sizes of balls twice. Forehand-dominant players like Fang Bo and Xu Xin were significantly weakened, while backhand-dominant players like Tomokazu Harimoto, Lin Yun-Ju, and Lin Gaoyuan started rising up in world rankings. Ma Long also upgraded his backhand technique to keep up with the others.

I always thought Fang Bo was very similar to Ma Long, looks-wise and playstyle. His forehand also resembled Ma Long's signature shot. I remember confusing him a few times when the camera was shooting his back

Fang Bo was very, very good
Not at the level of Xu Xin, Zhang Jike let alone Ma Long, but he had the potential to beat them on a good day.
Honestly this generation is more impressive than the current one, but Fan Zhendong remains magnificent

The truth is proven that the China team did make a grave mistake when replacing Fang Bo with ...Lin Gaoyuan, who later, for a long time, proved that Lin Gaoyuan was ...such a loser. That decision destroyed the fighting spirit in Fang Bo. Since then, Fang Bo has been understanding that a CV was very, very important.
The CV of Lin Gaoyuan must be very, very powerful.

FangBo suffered from the same predicament that many players faced with the change to 40+ ball.

I still remember, last time fang bo performance on 2015 WTTC when final with ML. After that start on 2016 i see many match Fang Bo lose to other player even with underrated player

Yes! He performed incredibly during 2015! Vice champion! Gotta give respect because h he was the only one that challenged Ma Long during that WTTC.

Truly an underrated legend. A shame he didn't shine as much as he deserved...

He should've left for another country, like Germany, or even the U.S., pursued citizenship, and could've been a stud with tons of support.
