  They actually switched from being top and bottom at different times.  Also Mariah has always been more nervous in stage than Whitney.  That’s partially why the Oscar’s was harder for Mariah. Much bigger stage.

  We didn't know how good we had it back then. Both Whitney and Mariah in the same stage. We were blessed to have this collaboration.

  Mariah actually classifies herself as an alto due to her speaking voice even though her range is that of a soprano!<br>I think that does explain a lot of her choices especially since she’s constantly switching between a lower and higher than whitney

  Okay so I’m a bit late but, I wanna say a few things. Most fans actually consider the Oscar’s to be where Whitney shined more and this Oprah performance where Mariah shined more. Because let’s be honest, Whitney DOES have the relatively easier parts in this song, as Mariah has more range to cover in shorter spans of time too (and this was already PAST Mariah’s vocal prime lol, tho it was past Whitney’s too tbf). That being said, Mariah has said she was SUPER nervous at the Oscar’s, not just for the obvious point of it being a bigger stage and audience, but also bc before stage she had a short interview where Joan Rivers had brought up the fact that she had gained weight, and so she felt super self conscious when going on stage with Whitney and singing in front of thousands of people. Mariah infamously has stage freight, so unless she feels comfortable and confident, her self esteem and nerves get the best of her when singing a lot.

  Whitney is the power of the song but Mariah does sing under and over on various parts which is impressive

  Fun fact at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQeJJfunWCg&amp;t=627">10:27</a> Whitney forgot which part she was supposed to be singing so Mariah made a quick adjustment. Apparently Whitney kept forgetting this part other times they sang too haha. You can see the &apos;you did ity again&apos; look on Mariah.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQeJJfunWCg&amp;t=479">7:59</a> Yeah their voices sounded like they were competing at the Oscars, it wasn’t intentional but Mariah wasn’t having a great vocal day, nervous first time at Oscar’s, going through a divorce (a lil self conscious from Joan’s weight comment), etc. Whitney was going all out &amp; wasn’t adapting 💀 So Mariah did a lot to keep up while Whitney was doing too much in comparison and it sounded like they were competing but still a pretty good performance. Oprah they were so in sync and comfortable, they had been spending a lot of time together before this performance promoting the movie/song. I guess a year went by and they weren’t on the same frequency for the Oscar’s 😭 The song did win an Oscar though.
