As a Minnesotan, the key is to not think about it. More specifically, you have to reframe in your mind what cold is.

I now know more about winter jackets than I ever imagined. I feel sorry for the people at the next party I go to. For this, I thank you.

One of the great things about wool is it is quiet. Plastic coats are very noisy particularly in the rain . When you are outside and want to listen to nature and don't want to be noticed the pop pop pop and creaky noises of your coat can cause a lot of unwanted attention.

The thing I don’t like about videos on winter jackets is everyone thinks everyone is a hiker and all they ever do is hike.<br>All I do is wait at the bus stop or the train station and I’m tired of freezing or being hit in the face by the wind.

A vest underneath your jacket makes a HUGE difference in warmth. Doesnt matter if it's thin or thick, it keeps a ton of heat closer to your chest.

For anyone who wants to know, dead air is what really provides insulation for all these jackets. Dead air is the best insulator known to man outside of a vacuum. So the strands of wool, plastic, or down actually conduct heat significantly more than the air between the strands. The issue with using air as an insulator is that if the air gap gets too big, it allows convection to occur, and it is no longer insulating. This is where the materials (wool, down, etc.) come in, breaking up that gap to create multiple smaller gaps of dead air within the same volume. So even though down isn't nearly as good of an insulator than dead air, having it in the insulation allows for a larger gap to exist while still maintaining the properties of dead air. This leads to why higher fill power down is more insulating than lower fill (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIMhDEVghPc&t=660">11:00</a>). Lower fill down needs more down to maintain the same volume of dead air, which means there is more heat conducting material, making is less insulating. The higher fill down creates more amount of dead air while minimizing the amount of conduction going on in the insulation. <br><br>I hope this makes sense.
