  I kept cringing at how often they cursed over comms. As a veteran &nbsp;its a huge nono especially in an academy were you train future officers.

  One great thing about the 32nd century setting is that it&apos;s so far in the future that we just need one time travel episode to jettison it into a parallel universe. <br><br>Look, I&apos;m not that demanding, but there&apos;s stuff in the 32nd century shows that&apos;s just... dumb. The Burn for starters. But above all that 11 centuries from our time would look as recognizable as it is. Discovery jumping 900 years into the future and then saving the Federation is, again, dumb. A jump of 200 or 300 years would be way more believable. Now it&apos;s like a ship full of Vikings landed on British shores during WWII and be key to winning it.

  I hate the way new trek looks, ever since the 09 movie everything has this glossy lens flare too much CGI background aesthetic that&apos;s just off-putting. They care more about showing off what the can do visually more then actual good storytelling and character development.

  I have lunch every Monday with a group of mostly retired people. One of them, whom I&apos;ve known socially for maybe 15 years, said something about Star Trek. I didn&apos;t know he was a fan. We had a long talk about what we like and don&apos;t like. We agreed about somethings and disagreed about others. However, we didn&apos;t get angry and yell at each other or storm off swearing never to talk to each other. I look forward to talking to him again about Star Trek.

  Saying this is better than Section 31 isn&apos;t a compliment. That bar is so low its in the core of a neutron star. While it isn&apos;t fair to assume all the writers of the newer shows &apos;don&apos;t get Trek&apos; I&apos;m convinced that the writers of S31 completely missed the assignment. They clearly just wanted to make generic sci-fi slop.

  I think one of the issues with newer Trek that perhaps isn&apos;t addressed enough is a lot of the stories revolve around galaxy altering, world destroying, apocalyptic stories. The entire universe changing because of a time shift, the burn making dilithium inert (which is its own long and dumb debate). While certainly some apocalyptic level stuff has occurred in Trek before it was usually relegated to an episode such as Yesterday&apos;s Enterprise or All Good Things.<br><br>In a lot of New Trek the stakes are always ridiculously high, with this weird need to top it at every turn. Lower Decks is a good example of this contrast: It doesn&apos;t do the thing I&apos;m describing.<br><br>Can the stakes be very high for an extended period? Absolutely. Take the Dominion War as an example. The Stakes were incredibly high. The Alpha Quadrant was at stake. Not from total annihilation but from conquering. See the difference? The threat was big, but it wasn&apos;t galaxy alteringly huge, at least not on the same scale as Discovery. Academy automatically suffers from this issue as its entire story is an offshoot of that very problem. Same thing with the JJ Abrams movies. Vulcan is utterly destroyed. Even Picard suffered from it with the destruction of Romulus. Everyone is trying to top each other in crazy ass events and no one is focusing on coherent plots.<br><br>Is it the only problem with newer Trek? NO, but I don&apos;t think it&apos;s talked about enough.

  This is very similar to my own take on it. &nbsp;We should still have Lower Decks. &nbsp;It could have been the Simpsons of Star Trek...with us for freaking ever. &nbsp; Regarding Academy, I genuinely liked 3/10 episodes. &nbsp;A couple others were so-so, and I had to struggle through the remainder. &nbsp; &nbsp;I grew up during the TOS syndication into film era. &nbsp;I remember I was a media student assistant at college when TNG first aired and was able to hijack one of the comms lecture halls and have my own private screening LOL. &nbsp;I generally liked the senior/adult characters, but wasn&apos;t too thrilled about the kids, to the point where I can say I don&apos;t care about any of them by end of season. &nbsp;That&apos;s probably more on the writers than the actors, but I can&apos;t be positive when it comes to young actors who I haven&apos;t seen before. &nbsp; The final episode was also rather apocalyptic, I&apos;d say.
