The christian faith teaches that we should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. A true Christian who is strong in their faith understands this principle. Christianity is a lifestyle with standards laid down in the bible. This is not a matter of opinion, it’s bible. There are a lot of so called christians who identify as christians, and don’t really understand what it entails. The beautiful Amaka is one of them!

This is all well and good, until you speak to the children that were raised in such settings. The parents do not often have issues because they love, understand, and give grace to each other. The children benefit from that love, but there is a silent religious war; especially from extended family. The unspoken tension when you are with your Muslim or Christian grandparents, aunties and uncles. One family is praying for one of your parents to be saved, while another side of the family makes it seem like one parent is not going to God through the right channel. Some family members ask you what religion you practice and if you choose one, one side of the family looks at you with pity, almost like a lost soul. The children are unnecessarily confused, especially when they are young, on how to act with different members of the family. Most children raised from such homes do not have a strong religious standing. When older, the children may even choose neither of these religions. I believe people should think beyond themselves before making some relationship decisions. If you do decide to do inter-religious marriage, you have to prepare your children well for what is to come. The negatives: the confusion, unsolicited opinions, sense of neither belonging here nor there, etc. The positives: the fun of both worlds, celebrating 5 festivities in a year, the lesson in tolerance, the lesson in love, etc. You have to be very intentional in shaping their mind and reassuring them through the confusions.
