I chose Cambodia a year ago, moved less than 6 months ago and am residing in Chreav, living frugally among the local villagers. It is almost completely adjacent to home of origin: 1970's USVI. Close to Siem Reap, closer to local home front stores. I love the Khmer people and am satisfied with the experience so far, have made some very lovely friends and extended family. My heart goes out to those affected by the earthquake earlier this week in the Philippines.

Easy decision. A Filpina sang me a wonferful love song, so I had to move there.
Then I gave her family money and it didn't work out so I had to move to Cambodia to live alone on my VA benefits.

The food in Siem Reap is delicious and IMHO healthier than in the Philippines.

I moved to Cambodia a month ago, and quickly learned it is very easy to keep food costs down, if you do as the locals do, buy from street vendors, AND buy locally grown/produced goods. I rarely spend over $5/day on food, and usually it's half that. You learn to shift from imported foods like apples which are as expensive as chicken, and instead get things like eggs and carrots which are pennies. I'm still trying the local fruit, and I admit, they are different, an acquired taste perhaps, and I'm hoping they will grow on me. Some imported goods, like milk and milk products like cheese and chocolate, I continue to treat myself to, just not every day. If you are frugal, and do a bit of looking around, you'll quickly discover how the locals can live so cheap. Granted, they pile up in homes to keep rent down, but all of their other expenses are minimal. They can live off of that $100/month job. My rent may be $400/month, in a nice 1 bedroom condo in Phnom Penh, but all of my other monthly expenses are less than $200/month, and I'm living comfortably on my own. It's a great deal.

Pennies make dollars! It's the little expenses that add up. $1500 income or retirement, and you can't afford to live? That would be a spending problem, not income. Live in Thailand for 3 yrs and $1500 wouldn't be an issue, be smart about spending, and definitely not starving or lacking things to keep you occupied.

Very good video with great practical information. I lot of your thoughts can be applied to the west or wherever you live. One thing for sure you mention is location. Many people do not factor in the cost of a long commute which eats up the savings from having cheaper rent. Even as a travelor coming for a few weeks, I can relate to it feeling so cheap, and we tend to freely spend money. Then we add up our expenses and we are a bit in shock from the totals.

I love Siem Reap. I’ve been in Siem Reap 7 times. The Landscape is beautiful and the people are very friendly. The food is great.

Well thought out and well said, thank you.. I visited the Philippines twice in the past two years. I stayed in Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete and a couple others. On the first visit I enjoyed these areas very much, however, on my second visit I found many aspects of the country lacking in areas I had not on the first trip. I hope to visit Cambodia this winter for at least 3 months to get a realistic feel for the country before I commit. Thanks again.

Without a doubt, one if the biggest traps for people living abroad is not tracking your spending for small purchases. Death by a thousand cuts.
