He lived in Sugamo for four years but hated the noise made by the Yamanote train line nearby and had to move. There's a stone monument near where his house was, opposite JR Sugamo Station.

Tokugawa Yoshinobu or Tokugawa Keiki, was the only Shogun that never set foot at Edo castle. He spent his entire tenure outside his capital as he initiated massive government overhaul and major changes to reforms the shogunate. Unfortunately it was too late and it fell in less than a year. A remarkable Man.

About 30 years ago I had a job scanning in some of the photos Tokugawa took. I particularly liked one he took of Kudanshita.

On the one hand, I like this video and it’s clear explanation of the topic. I also love the amazing photographs you were able to find! And then I realized, there’s no way in high hell any of these are actual historical photographs. Therefore, I should be very angry… And yet, my God, what an interesting use of AI to illustrate history that we can’t directly know. I’m sure this won’t be abused in the future or anything!
