In fact, Mass Effect is the best game about the Fermi Paradox ever.

As a guy who likes science, I was thinking it was quite silly how the timelines were compressed... like... all alien species in a galaxy that exists for billions of years, have reached the Citadel not long before humans reached the American continent through the strait of Bering? And the precursors also didn´t seem to be around for much longer before... and that's the exact moment the narrative brilliance of the Reapers clicks into place.

What felt like lazy sci-fi writing or a massive chronological plot hole was actually the central mystery all along. The universe isn't full of conveniently synchronized civilizations just by a huge coincidence... nope... it is an artificially engineered graveyard running on a 50,000-year loop.

In the real-world Fermi Paradox, the "Great Filter" is a hypothetical wall... abiogenesis, nuclear self-destruction, or runaway climate collapse... that stops civilizations from colonizing the stars. Mass Effect turns the Filter into an active predator

The Mass Relays and the Citadel are not abandoned precursor gifts; they are honeypots. By giving young species ready-made faster-than-light transit, the Reapers dictate the exact technological path every civilization follows. Nobody develops alternative physics or discovers deep-space stealth; everyone builds along the predictable path of Element Zero.

Whenever civilizations reach the point of creating artificial intelligence (or just becoming too widespread to easily purge), the Reapers emerge from dark space, decapitate galactic leadership at the Citadel in hours, and systematically harvest all advanced life.

In real astrophysics, a million-year gap is a rounding error. Without an external force, a single spacefaring species should colonize an entire galaxy in a few tens of millions of years, leaving undeniable evidence everywhere.

Mass Effect solves the silence of the cosmos with the Dark Forest variant of the Fermi Paradox: space is quiet not because intelligent life is impossible, but because the apex predator culls the herd the moment anyone speaks loud enough to be heard. The game turns a trope that looks like convenient narrative compression into one of the most chilling, coherent cosmic horror premises in modern science fiction.

You left out the entire illos section!!!? Talking with that vi and discovering what happened to the prothians was seriously the best revelation I've ever experienced in a video game.

After Mass Effect got referenced in a webcomic called Between Failures, I picked up the whole trilogy for about $35. Best purchase in my entire life as a gamer

I always found it kind of funny that Sovereign is the vanguard/herald (a “harbinger”, if you will), while Harbinger is one of, if not THE oldest Reaper, and behaves like the boss of all the other Reapers (the “sovereign”, you could say).

4:57 - "[Kaidan] has a wierd ...like NPC ...disposable NPC vibe about him." - which is both wild for a major character and a pretty non-controversial take on his personality.

Aww, you cut out the whole bit of Ilos? The conversation with Vigil? Something about the music and Vigils voice makes it one of my favorite dialogues in the game. Right up there with the conversation with Sovereign on Vermire.

I honestly like how in ME1, you can get upgrades that make game playthrough 3, feel like you're a real badass. Weapons never over heat, grenades and abilities do insane damage. You take little. Its fun.
