    On Luther&apos;s long term consequences... In 1870, when Italy took Rome and ended the temporal power of the Pope, Otto von Bismarck considered offering the Pope asylum in Germany... Because Pius IX was such a character he seriously expected that actually interacting with him would drive the German Catholics into Lutheranism.<br>Even in the 19th century there was still some animosity.
