I love that that kept some key sounds effects from Wukong and brought it to this game giving the Black Myth games more sense of identity

I really didn't expect the main character to use the king of ghosts Zhong Kui as an soldier/vessel

Following this live demonstration, it is evident that the protagonist is Du Ping, Zhong Kui’s brother-in-law.

I'm glad someone is having the same reaction as mine to these unbelievable graphics! No one commented on it on the original video.

Note that the protagonist is actually a guardian spirit; that is why we see that the game’s ‘handicap’ is possession, just as in Wukong it was transformation.
When I think back to that gameplay, it blew my mind.

Chinese games possess a unique cultural depth; the content is something to be savored slowly. Zhong Kui appears much more mature than Wukong did a few years ago. Kudos to Game Science—let’s all look forward to it.

I’m a fan of you from China, and this is a current theory about the identity of the protagonist in Black Myth: Zhong Kui:

He is not Zhong Kui. He is Zhong Kui’s brother-in-law.

In the classic Chinese folk legend “Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister,” the husband of Zhong Kui’s younger sister, Zhong Xiaomei, is named Du Ping.

Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister

First, let’s spend a minute quickly going over the story of “Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister.”

According to legend, when Zhong Kui traveled to the capital to take the imperial examination, he was short of money.

It was his fellow townsman and close friend, Du Ping, who financially supported him. Zhong Kui was exceptionally talented and passed the palace examination as the top scholar, but because of his terrifying appearance, he was questioned and humiliated by the emperor and the entire court.

Hot-tempered and proud, Zhong Kui flew into a rage and ultimately struck his head against the imperial steps and died.

After Zhong Kui’s death, many people from his hometown began coveting Zhong Xiaomei because of her beauty. Zhong Kui, meanwhile, had already been granted the title of “Great General of Exorcism and Demon-Slaying” by the Jade Emperor.

On New Year’s Eve, Zhong Kui temporarily returned to the mortal world, leading a procession of ghost soldiers carrying a bridal sedan and playing drums and music. Intimidating those who might prey upon his sister, he personally arranged for her to marry Du Ping, repaying Du Ping for his kindness in the past.

At the same time, he was fulfilling his own wish and entrusting his sister to someone he could truly trust.

In many versions of the story, Du Ping and Zhong Xiaomei had already fallen in love with each other and were deeply devoted to one another.

In the 1995 TV series “The Legend of Yama,” Du Ping and Zhong Xiaomei were even portrayed as lovers who had made a promise to each other in a previous life, only to be reunited in this life after enduring countless twists and hardships.

Identifying the Protagonist

So why do I believe that the protagonist of Black Myth: Zhong Kui is Du Ping?

And what exactly is the story being told in Black Myth’s version?

Most of you have probably seen the previous PV. Zhong Xiaomei is most likely preparing a meal using all kinds of supernatural creatures and rare ingredients. This feast is being prepared for a man who has been brought in by ghost officials with his head covered.

The previous PV ended precisely at the moment when his hood was about to be removed. That was arguably the biggest mystery left hanging at the end of the PV.

With the release of the new PV, the mystery has finally been solved.

The hooded man from the end of the previous PV is the very same character now revealed as the game’s protagonist.

There are three details that make this connection particularly clear.

First, if we increase the brightness of the original PV1 footage, we can see that the two characters are wearing exactly the same rough linen clothing, with the same straps on the back and the same signs of wear and tear. Even the damaged areas of the clothing match perfectly.

Second, they have exactly the same belt.

And finally, the most striking detail: the exact same pair of bells attached to the arm guards.

These paired bells on the arms are clearly not just ordinary decoration. They may serve a function similar to marking or restraining someone who is under control.

Much like putting a bell around a pet’s neck.

The reason for this unusual outfit may be directly connected to the protagonist’s identity and his current state. I’ll come back to this later.

So, once we establish that the hooded man is indeed the protagonist, let’s move on to the second key point:

Zhong Xiaomei’s attitude toward him.

The meal Zhong Xiaomei prepares is incredibly elaborate, solemn, and extravagant. It includes multiple rare and extraordinary ingredients, including Tai Sui, and at least one ingredient is stored inside what is clearly an expensive treasure box associated with an immortal crane. These are obviously not ingredients you would normally find in an ordinary household kitchen.

Even Zhong Kui would probably be drooling at the sight of this meal. I bet if she were cooking for her own brother, she’d just give him a simple piece of flatbread(LOL). So who exactly is she putting this much effort into feeding?

Now look at Zhong Xiaomei’s expression when she brings the food over. At first, she doesn’t even dare to raise her head. Just as she is about to leave, she secretly sneaks a glance at him. Only after confirming that he cannot see her does she begin carefully examining him.

Both the extraordinary quality of the meal and Zhong Xiaomei’s attitude suggest that our protagonist has an extremely special identity.

Reconstructing the Story

Now that we understand these two basic clues, I’m going to approach this from a different angle and reconstruct the entire story.

As I tell the story, I’ll point out the evidence along the way, which should make the theory easier to understand.

My theory is this:

Du Ping was martial by nature, skilled with the sword, and an exceptionally upright man, much like Zhong Kui himself.

However, the two men pursued their ideals in very different ways. Zhong Kui sought fame and official recognition through the imperial examinations so that he could become an official and help the people. Du Ping did not share that belief.

So Zhong Kui traveled to the capital to take the imperial examination, while Du Ping stayed behind. Zhong Kui unfortunately died at the palace steps and, after death, gained the recognition of the Jade Emperor and was appointed a great demon-slaying deity.

Meanwhile, Du Ping also died. He may have lost his life while fighting in an attempt to uphold justice or defend someone from injustice.

Look at the protagonist’s defining facial features. There are two clearly identifiable injuries: an impact wound on his forehead and a penetrating slash wound on his neck.

Obviously, the wound on his forehead was probably not fatal, while the wound on his neck could potentially have severed a major artery.

Later, there is a scene in which Xiaomei applies makeup to the protagonist. The wound on his forehead is completely covered, but the wound on his neck remains clearly visible. This seems to carry a very strong visual implication.

That is why I believe these two injuries are actually defining characteristics of the protagonist, and both carry important information.

The forehead wound corresponds to the location where Zhong Kui struck his head against the imperial steps. It may symbolically suggest that Du Ping and Zhong Kui shared the same pursuit and ideals: both were upright, uncompromising men who refused to bow to injustice.

The fact that the forehead wound can be covered may also explicitly indicate that this man is not Zhong Kui himself, while simultaneously suggesting that he is no longer a normal living human being.

The editing of the PV clearly combines scenes from different points in the game, yet the protagonist never changes clothes, never appears to bathe, and his injuries never heal. All of these details suggest that Du Ping is no longer a normal “living person.”

Zhong Kui may have violated the rules of the underworld to bring Du Ping back to life and given him the Seven-Star Sword. The bells attached to his arm guards may serve to restrain his instincts and prevent him from losing control or falling into demonic possession. As someone who is no longer a normal living human, his injuries may never fully heal. After receiving spiritual power, Du Ping would be able to move between the realms of the living and the dead, hunting down and eliminating lesser demons and evil spirits.
It is highly probable that Zhong Kui will assign Du Ping deeply symbolic missions, potentially involving the rescue of his sister, Zhong Xiaomei.along with the impassable romantic chasm and the agonizing shackles of conflict between the living and the dead. In my view, this outlines the narrative trajectory for Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
