  For a long time i thought Patrick himself is Red John because Red John makes the smiley which has Patrick's droopy eyes.

  My assumption when I heard Red John tell Jane the 7 names was that Red John manipulated events so that those would be the names on his list

  The easiest answer is this: Red John didn't have to whittle names down like Jane because he already knew who he was, so all he had to do once he knew Kirkland had a list of seven names who couldn't possibly be Red John was come up with a list of seven names most likely to be him. From there, it was simply a matter of asking who Jane wouldn't trust, who made Jane uncomfortable. The flaw in the writing was that of the six only McAllister wasn't a recurring character, which meant Jane had almost no interaction with him, which made his inclusion odd, and being odd it made him the obvious red herring, which ironically, or not, made him the obvious Red John.

  Most of these theories are irrelevant because they rely on someone getting Jane's list of 7, however they made a point stating that RJ knew the list before Jane had ever narrowed the handshakes down to 7. Meaning that the most likely theory is, that RJ got a hand on all of Jane's case files (via the Blake Association) and narrowed it down himself

  He followed every single case Jane took on, he had people from the Blake Association in the Napa Country Sheriff's Department, FBI, Local Police / Sherriff Departments, Judiciary, SWAT / Local Tac-Units and most importantly in this case the CBI. Red John knew precisely when Lorelei Martin slipped up and revealed that Jane had shaken hands with him, from that moment he knew Jane's starting point. Because he had intelligence, patience and memory equal (or close) to Jane (and a LOT more connections / man power), he simply applied the exact same elimination criteria Jane did. On top of all that off the 7 suspects: 4 where in the Blake association (Him, Bertram, Reese Smith and Partridge) the organisation Red John literally ran and had control over, 2 where members of Visualize (Brett Stiles and Haffner) a group Red John was apart of in his early life and still had connections with, leaving just 1 person out (Bob Kirkland) who's brother was a follower of Red John, which made Kirkland chase him down alone, like Jane was, for revenge (something Red John obviously knew about with his connections in law enforcement). So with his intelligence and vast network of control and connections it's actually not that impressive he came up with the list, it's fair more impressive that Jane did... he didn't guess who Jane thought was a suspect or how many suspects there were, he rather knew who he made or unfortunately looked like Red John. HE MADE THE LIST, it was Jane who figured it out! But psychologically, you don't see it that way because Red John only shows Jane the list after he solves it.

  I know the shows been out for a while but The mentalist has made a recent resurgence and for a show where the entire my mystery is uncovering someone’s identity. Putting his face in the thumbnail is bound to spoil it for new watchers.

  The simplest explanation is - Red John has equal if not superior mind to Jane together with near unlimited resources that Jane lack. Blake Association is a much crazier and grander cult-eque organization, and we can see how powerful Bret Stiles and Visualize is.
