In 2015, Uli Emanuele became a household name in wingsuit BASE jumping by threading a narrow gap in a rock wall above Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland — a wingsuit flight widely regarded as one of the most technical ever completed. The video passed six million views. It made him a GoPro athlete, put him in Red Bull's Ultimate Rush, and turned a quiet 29-year-old from South Tyrol into a name every proximity flying pilot knew. What the fame obscured was the discipline underneath it. Friends described Uli Emanuele as surgical. He climbed to his own exits. He calculated every variable. He refused to jump when a single detail felt wrong. On German television in 2015 he said plainly that fear was useful, that it kept him from making mistakes, and that before every jump he reminded himself one error could make it his last. That precision is what separated Uli Emanuele from the rest of the proximity flying world. Wingsuit BASE jumping tolerates almost no margin, and Emanuele operated in the thinnest margins anyone had filmed. Other pilots flew fast lines. He flew exact ones. On August 17, 2016, filming in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Uli Emanuele crashed and died before his parachute could deploy. He was one of two BASE jumpers killed in that valley on the same day. Five days later the wingsuit community lost Alexander Polli in Chamonix. It remains the darkest month the sport has recorded.
