Lamola contrasted global military spending of 2.9 trillion dollars with the comparatively small resources needed to fund the SDGs, and called for reform of the UN Security Council, noting that 70 percent of Security Council resolutions over the past decade have concerned conflicts on the African continent despite the continent holding no permanent seat, reaffirming South Africa's support for a permanent African seat with full veto prerogatives.
