He Found a Stranger Passed Out in His Garage… Then the Yard Took Over

While working on this property, I had a chance to spend a few minutes with the homeowner—and what he shared really stuck with me. He’s had a tough time living here. His mower has been stolen multiple times, and he told me that if something isn’t nailed down, it “walks off in the middle of the night.” Even storing equipment in the garage hasn’t helped. At one point, he discovered someone living in his garage—passed out from using drugs. Thankfully, he was able to get help from the police to remove them. But that gives you a sense of what he’s dealing with. Dad and I spent two days mowing the insanely tall grass, raking up the clippings, trimming back overgrown trees, and even uncovering an old concrete path that had been lost to time. While we worked, we noticed what looked like drug deals going on just a few houses down, right in the alleyway. It’s heartbreaking to see how much this environment is working against the people who live here. But I believe that every person caught in that cycle still has a chance to turn things around. It’s easy to look at people and say, “They’re the problem,” or “That kind of person will never change.” But what if, instead, we quietly thought to ourselves: “I wish them the best. Lord, please watch over them in their struggle.” That shift in mindset grows something inside you. Compassion. Perspective. Purpose. Before you know it, maybe you’ll find yourself doing something unexpected—like mowing a stranger’s lawn for free—because that’s what you can do. Not everyone’s gift is lawn care. But we’ve all got something. Maybe it's carpentry, cooking, fixing cars, or simply lending a listening ear. Somewhere in your life, you’ve picked up skills and experiences—and those might be exactly what someone else needs during a hard time. For me, this work has become more than a job. It’s a mission. A calling. And every time we help someone who’s struggling, I’m reminded why I started. Word of the Day: “Eucatastrophe” It’s a sudden, positive turn in a story—right when things seem darkest.
