  Dang. This was. Way interesting and so well presented. I went there before they built the fence, saw the pupfish and that was awesome. I didn't know and now i do. Fascinating.

  The Mojave Desert is a spreading center, in some ways similar the Great Rift Valley of Africa. The driving force is the San Andreas fault, which originates near the top of the Sea of Cortez and disappears into the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco. There is a lot of plumbing under the Mojave! The portion of Mitchell Caverns that is not open to the public contains another bottomless hole. Back in the 1920's the [then] owner of Mitchell had himself lowered 1500 feet down that hole. When he ran out of rope he was nowhere near the bottom and his light did not reach the sides of the cavern he was suspended in. There are several credible accounts which document an underground river several thousand feet below Kokoweef Peak, Southwest of Las Vegas. A very persistent conspiracy theory asserts an underground, water-filled channel large enough to allow the passage of a nuclear submarine connects Walker Lake, which adjoins the China Lake Naval Weapons Station in Nevada, to the Pacific Ocean. While the veracity of that particular conspiracy theory is doubtful, the connection of Devil's Hole to a very large underground water system seems likely. So long as doing so would not harm the pupfish in any way, I agree with Skeptic-936's assessment that a remote controlled submersible could teach us a great deal about the geology under the Mojave Desert. One last point is that I would much rather see the feds spend four million dollars on the Ash Meadows Fish Conservation Facility than spending the money on a few more missiles or tanks. Everything about Devil's Hole is unique in the world. Every dollar we spend studying this place and protecting it is money well spent.

  my mom told me to dig to china, thats as far as i got.<br>when i was there, it was a hole, no fence, no platform. &nbsp;you could see the fish, and it was warm water. &nbsp;i didnt know it was an unknown depth then.

  its like the snail darter, it was suppose to be the only place it was and that stopped tennessee from building the telico dam. &nbsp;then they got its dna and found out it was a common fish. &nbsp;they did relocate some of them, but they went ahead and built the dam.

  That explains why there is a Navel base in Hawthorne Nevada!! It&apos;s said that a submarine can pass under from desert to the Pacific.

  The high temperature of the water suggests a bottom ~10,000 feet, unless there is a hot spring at a shallower depth. Of course, the hot spring is receiving its heat from great depth. I expect somebody tried sounding the bottom with a weight on a long line. No info here about that. Perhaps the passage winds too much for that.
