After 40 plus years mountain biking my best advice is to look where you want to go, not where you don't want to go.

Crashes usually occur when you say 'one final last run'

I'm 70 and my experience with mountain biking is that physical conditioning is key.

I am 72 and I mtb at Bonelli in SoCal regularly. Build confidence and safety with 'baby steps'.

Age is a number (51 now), I just found out the hard way. Broke my neck in 2 places on a black trail. For me the only way to learn where my limits are. Now I know, I was extremely lucky to be alive. Love the sport, only blue and red trails from now on.
Love your channel mate, thanks!

I’m naturally cautious, but I gravitate to controlled risks. That being said, I have broken bones going otb. I recommend never riding a feature if you’re not feeling confident, but also an acceptance of the risk. Mtb will ALWAYS be dangerous, no matter your fitness, age or skill level

Great video. I'm 63. I've been skateboarding and riding dirt bikes my whole life. I race in a local hare Scramble series. My generation invented BMX I we rode our bike everywhere making jumps out of everything.
I started mountain biking about 3 years ago (got myself more bike than I need through work - Intense Tracer). I understand my limitations through reference of my lifestyle. I've only ridden the mountain bike about 12 times - I just go to bike parks a few times a year. I treat it with great caution yet with enough confidence to still progress and have fun. The bike is WAY different than the motorcycle. It takes time to adapt. I've done 70 foot dirt bike jumps and have jumped FMX ramps. I'm nervous hitting 15 foot bike jumps.
Don't go over your head (or the bars). Take time to progress reasonably. I heard once that a great stuntman once said, "If you want to learn to jump off buildings, go out in front of your house and jump off the sidewalk curb first". Words to live by.

I'm 33 and it took me over a year to build the neuromuscular conditioning I need to really ride.
I found it helps to have a set of trails that can CHALLENGE your limits without being unsafe at your current level

Best advice is if you aren't feeling completely hungry happy and excited to hit that feature today (sharp focus to control all parameters) AND you feel a question mark about your skill level to pull it off, STOP and skip it, then work on your skills somewhere else. You are not stopping progression, you are progressing smartly.

I’m 2-3 months out from my worst crash in 36 years—OTB to the helmet, fracturing my C7 vertebrae. Fortunately I expect to recover back to normal, but not without some surgery and some serious reflection on my age and athleticism. At almost 62, I think I have been riding with skills I developed in my 30s and 40s, but without enough respect for my naturally declining reaction time. I still don’t know exactly what happened during my crash, but I know I got out of sync with my suspension during a series of a couple of compressions. I do believe that 10-20 years ago I wouldn’t have even fallen, let alone broken my neck.

I was very interested in this video, but I must confess that I don’t have any better idea of how to train for my age than before I watched it.
