2:00:47 That sentence was never updated after the rules changed from the very first to the second edition. In the very first edition of the game, there was no option to direct build complex track at all. With the second printing, that option (along with the new costs of $+1/+2 for doing so) was added, but the word "simple" wasn't removed from that sentence in the rules. There's been several threads including official rulings that you can build complex as the first tile of the game.

As for whether that's too strong: Gotta bid for it ^^
(But also, I have managed to lose with the biohazard opening before)

1:50:30 Edward could just have placed E in the town one further north; the delivery still works by doing one fewer loop around the biohazard. Would have been 3 more track points. The people of Penn Hills want their station!

I would love to know if taking the special action in round 1, taking a bunch of shares and building 3 straights to connect 4 cities would be viable at all. It feels crazy, but you basically have a full network on turn one.

I am distinctly unhappy with even the existence of that first move there.

Great play! With our group we actually don't play track limitation with the transparent tile set now. As in, if we are missing a complex co-existing curves tile, we'll just lay one on top. We do this because I've always felt that there are very few maps where this is actually designed in as a mechanic. And it always felt a bit mean to miss out due to tile limitation.

Obviously an outstanding opening build, but yes, now that it has been discovered, I guess you have to make them pay for it in the opening auction. I feel like Western US has the same issue, the swamp build in the SouthEast corner is OP as a first build. Every time I've seen it played that player has won.

Hi, is the first track really legal? The rules say: "The very first track tile every player builds at the start of the game must be
adjacent to a city, and one end of the track on this SIMPLE TRACK tile must
connect to the city." I think you can build a maximum of 2 complex tracks during the first track-building phase.
