My family moved from the UK to San Francisco in 1967 also known as the summer of love. This song was popular in England before we left and was playing on the plane as we flew into San Francisco. I was 15 at the time, and it was a real culture shock, especially the music scene when San Francisco was a rock and roll mecca during the Bill Graham era. I went to countless concerts at Filmore West and Winterland over the next few years. Another British family we met that had lived there for some time had an older teenage daughter, and she and some friends took me and my sisters to Golden Gate Park and Haight Ashbury to check out the scene. The head shops were an eye opener, but I'd been to Carnaby Street in London, so the fashions were not all that outlandish by comparison.
