Here’s a modern-day Western fact: there was a class in some college a few years ago in which the students were challenged to come up with ideas for businesses that seemed kinda crazy. One guy came up with the idea of selling tumbleweeds, and after the class was over he went and did just that! He collected tumbleweeds (which don’t break down or rot) and rents them to Hollywood and others who need tumbleweeds for their films/shows and he apparently made a freaking killing at it!

When my grandfather emigrated to America in the early 1900s, he worked as a drover. He said that if your horse stepped in a gopher hole & broke his leg, you put him out of his misery and made sure to retrieve the saddle. Why? The saddle ($25) cost more than the horse! 😅

I believe the residents of Tombstone referred to the gunfight as "the incident on Freemont Street" until the dime novels got hold of it many years later. I studied the Civil War and Reconstruction, two major factors that greatly influenced the "wild west" as part of a History degree. The trouble was it spoiled watching most westerns for me. The person who survived a gun fight was the one who "kept his head when all around were losing theirs" not necessarily the fastest or even the most accurate.

The history of the Bowler, named after the man who made the first ones. A British landowner had the hats made for his game wardens. The round crown of the hat is actually very strong and of a poacher tried to beat the game warden over the head it was more likely be deflected. Then it became fashionable and was seen at Ascot and acquired “Derby” as a secondary name by the upper crust.
Bolo ties was created by a Navajo silversmith about 1890, but they didn’t become popular in Western attire till the 1920-30’s. I have one dated to about 1910

The "meanest guy in town" thing where one guy was known to just walk around shooting people on a whim and everybody cowering when they came around never made any sense to me

this video was excellent..I had the honor to work with a man who rode in the very last real cattle drive in the West..He was a young man in the 1920's when it happened...He was considered a "drover"...a simple herder of the long line of cows being sent to Abilene....he said it was a 200 mile drive...it was covered by the newspapers...He did NOT own his cow horse, he wore a straw hat , no gun , very ordinary ranch laborer...$3 a week...the drive took 12 days..He said everyone got a $10 bonus at the end of the drive...He walked away with $ 16 for his 10 hour days....back then $ 16 was a Godsend...He later served in the Navy in the Pacific operating a landing craft...Amazing man....one of the Great Generation Veterans...

These songs feel like a journal written in soft ink, filled with quiet thoughts and gentle moments. As the melodies drift by, it’s like time begins to soften, and your heart is allowed to just be — still, tender, and open to everything you forgot you loved about slowing down

The first woman to hold elected office was, I believe, in Wyoming - elected Mayor. Still, men far outnumbered women in the old West. Those who did come west (unmarried) were pretty bold, and had a long streak of independence.

A decent list here, and spot on. Oddly, what many consider the most dangerous town in the west back then was Alta, Utah. Lots of killings there, and finally folks got mad and brought in some known law enforcement figures to clean it up.

I didn't know tumble weeds were not native to the US.
My great-grandfather was a cowboy for a time. He and his rubber bathtub went and worked a few ranches until he homesteaded in Missoula Montana. He was an English immigrant.

I’ve loved the Wild West, as a Brit, ever since I was 8 years old, and my aunt got me The Pictorial History of the Wild West by Horan and Sann. It gave me a firm understanding what the west was really like, but I still love a good Oater to this day!😀 Plus, my grandmother saw the Buffalo Bill West Show in London when she was a young child!
