A thing mapmen do with ads which you might you realise if you didn't grow up in the UK, is they actually telegraph (hehe) them. Before an ad, you'll notice a spinning black and white thing in the top right hand corner, which on British TV is how channels tell you (or at least used to) that an ad break is coming.

Interesting historical fact: At the start of WW1 the UK was the termination point for almost all of the transatlantic cables which meant we had control over the German transatlantic cable, which we promptly unplugged. This meant that later on the UK was able to intercept all of their diplomatic traffic since they used Sweden to relay diplomatic messages for them (this is perfectly legal under international diplomatic codes and laws) and the Swedish cables also came through the UK.

This is how the UK discovered the contents Zimmerman telegram which said essentially "Hey Mexico, want help to invade the US and take back the lands they took from you? We'll give you support as long as you ally with us. Also, please ask Japan if they want to invade the US too on our behalf". The UK couldn't admit of course that they were listening to the German diplomatic traffic or that they'd cracked the German ciphers so they bribed the Mexican telegraph agent to hand them a copy of the message and then promptly told the US government (who had previously relayed the enciphered message on behalf of Sweden to Mexico).

This incensed the US population to the point where it was a proximal cause for the US entry into WW1 as an "Associated power" (meant they could declare war & peace without consulting with the countries they were fighting on the side of so they weren't full "allies").

My uncle used to work on a cable laying ship, the things have a very distinct look as the cable is spooled in a massive cylinder that makes up most of the superstructure.

He has some fun stories of odd repair jobs they'd occasionally have to do. Apparently sabotage was rarely the cause of damaged cables, more often things like cookie cutter sharks constantly taking bites out of them because they could sense the electrical signals.😆

As a former AT&T subcontractor, I love that people don't know how this stuff works.

I built small cell phone towers. Take big tower, make small, put on every major street corner

It was fun for what I learned but building houses is much more fun
