Really appreciate that you have your iced dunkin in the background on top of your radiator! Nice little cherry on top for a character who supposedly lives in Boston. Really sets the scene lol

I love the idea that Shane doesn't even realize he's signaling interest, he's just so sincere and straightforward he can't help it. And absolutely can see that Ilya is drawn to that sincerity and wants to play with it, both to use for his own gain and because of genuine interest bc it's not something he encounters often

Psychodynamic Clinical Psychologist here - I just wanted to add a bit more brief psychological context around Ilya's inner world around being insecure, reckless, arrogant & self-destructive for anyone that is interested. Ilya's (layered on top of what you're already pointing to but with some subtle nuance) insecurity is not about talent, competence or desirability he reads as highly confident on the surface. His insecurity operates at a deeper level of safety, worth, and permanence organized around the belief that if he is fully known he will lose everything. This belief is experiential rather than rooted in low self-esteem shaped by an environment where love is conditional, survival depends on silence & power is enforced through fear. As a result his insecurity manifests through controlling narrative, withholding clarity & setting the terms of intimacy, essentially defensive strategies aimed at preventing exposure.

His apparent recklessness, self-destructiveness & arrogance function similarly as protective adaptations rather than core traits. The risks he takes provoking Shane or escalating intimacy without definition, reflect controlled recklessness grounded in a familiarity with danger that feels safer than vulnerability. His arrogance operates as a shield against appearing needy and against wanting something he could lose, these behaviours persist only as long as they protect him from vulnerability. They are not signs of immaturity or cruelty but of survival strategies that become unsustainable once love requires mutual risk.

I've seen a lot of people leave comments on how destructive he is, knowing the reason behind someone's behaviour doesn't excuse it but allows for empathy which fully allows you to take in the growth and arc of his story across the books and show.

Ilya was immediately interested in Shane. Ilya is coming from a place where everyone want something from him. In comes Shane waltzing up complementing him and being friendly. When Shane first talks Ilya is confused. He knows he's Canada's captain. Ilya is in the defensive, ready for trash talk. But Shane just says hi, complements him genuinely, and shakes his hand. As Ilya says, Shane makes him curious.

Hi ! Notice in ep. 1, scene 1, Ilya tries to light his cigarette 6 times. Ilya's lighter doesn't work until after he shakes hands with Shane - because now there's a spark.

Canadian here, you only see your breath on really cold days. There are many days in the winter where it’s cold but not ‘see your breath’ cold. Both of their jackets are unzipped and it’s a sunny day. Cold but not freezing.
Great scene analysis, you caught every beat. Love it!

I believe it's actually super common for people who feel out of control or submissive in their regular lives to crave dominance in the bedroom, and the same in reverse where people who are always in control and powerful in their regular life (and with all the pressures and expectations that come with that) tend to want to play a submissive role in the bedroom. It's part of why you hear so many accounts of high-powered business leaders and politicians having a dominatrix they go to regularly. I think for Shane, he's so high-strung and anxious all the time that it comes as a relief to give up a measure of control to Ilya in the bedroom, it allows him to get out of his own head and just enjoy the experience without worrying about being perfect. We also see this play out in the praise kink that Shane clearly has and that Ilya is aware of - he likes to be told what to do and then be rewarded for doing a good job

Now while I agree that Ilya is definitely toying with Shane a little bit in the beginning, I think there's a layer underneath that where Ilya is very infatuated with Shane and strongly attracted to him from the start, and his toying/manipulation isn't truly malicious in the sense of wanting to hurt Shane or actually damage his career in any significant way, but more about just having fun and looking for good sex. There was always an undercurrent of true infatuation with Shane from the beginning, because I think he found Shane's awkward and perhaps naive introduction - the open-hearted friendliness of it - really charming and sweet

On my last reheat I was surprised by the different reactions Shane and Ilya had in their post-game handshakes - the first time, Ilya says "see you at the draft" and Shane is clearly upset by that; the second time, after Shane wins and says "See you in October", Ilya has this fond little smile, again because he finds Shane so sweet and charming in a way that Ilya's never really gotten from people in his life. His family is abusive, his coach's son Sasha is clearly a bit of a jerk to hang out with. And even Svetlana, who shows him the most kindness and is clearly a good and loving presence in his life, most of their interactions are marked by sarcasm and deflection, with a lot of emotional walls and not a lot of open vulnerability - until of course the funeral scene in episode 5, which was special circumstances given all that was going on. But Shane is quite open and vulnerable (perhaps more vulnerable than he meant to be) right from the beginning, and Ilya craves more of that
