The adventure's not over until you get the treasure home and safe lol. And hauling it home was a whole ordeal!

GP for XP is its own reason for adventuring..

Reminds me of The Hobbit, when Bilbo earned his 1/14th share of the dragon horde, but could only carry two small chests of gold back home, along with his Sword and Mithril Chain shirt. (And some random ring of invisibility or something)

It was a source of cognitive dissonance in my early game-running career, the not wanting to bother with the minutiae of loot weight, while knowing it made no real sense. It was more like there was a silent agreement to pretend that your treasure goes on your magical debit card. The thing that broke me out of it was the realization that the only reason why players can even go after a treasure, is that it represents such a large and heavy chunk of material, that it can't be carried around, which is why the monster has to keep it in a hoard and guard it.

I had a gnome illusionist/thief who's main loot from one early adventure was a run down old donkey who could barely carry him.

Between adventures, i used my engineering non-weapon proficiency to craft a wooden 'suit' for him that quadrupled his carry weight. It slowed his movement somewhat, but allowed us to haul chests and bags of loot later on.

Engagement around Borlax and his gimicky 'power armor', that failed often and had to be repaired and maintained, became an important part of Lorgund's early adventures.

XP for GP and resource management helped make 1e so awesome to play. We were explorers and adventurers before we became heroes.

Remember casters wanted gems and jewelry while fighters didn’t mind coins if gold. Had a player carry a bag with some copper coins to jingle or another bag with food to throw at monsters to distract them from the group.

Martin, you are a trooper! Your videos come out like clock-work, pacing my week, and giving me so much food for thought. I love learning all of the connective bits of history, and the origins of how this game came to be. Your anecdotes are also charming, giving this channel a really authentic feeling, like I’m talking to a friend down at my local hobby store.
