I really wish that when Flynn is put in a cell after being sucked off into the computer that there was already an orange in there, just an unmoving orange sitting in the corner of a cell.

I guess we'll never know what James' dad thought about Tron.

For anyone who may have been confused by this: no, the famous concept artist Syd Mead is not in fact the same person as the equally famous video game designer Sid Meier.

There is a sound argument to be made that Tron is essential to modern sci-fi. You can see direct influences in how Ghost in the Shell (both the Manga and the Movie) handle cyberspace. You can see it in how the Matrix deals with their digital-to-real world transitions. Its visuals are clearly in conversation with Neuromancer in places (those "light barges" evoke a similar sense of tracer and finery in their rendering that the descriptions of the slow-ICE does.). It's sound design influenced movies of its era as much as Star Wars or Blade Runner. It really is, for all its jank, a milestone in science fiction.

It's absolutely vital that one puts themselves in the mindset of the era: compared to today, computers were much more novel and poorly understood by non-technical people. So the idea of there being this weird, abstract, hidden world of stuff going on inside them carrying out our stuff was an exciting idea. That's not just a security program, it's a digital warrior fighting for the oppressed. That's not just an arcade game, it's a battle to the death between two combatants. We, the users, are their gods, dictating the shape of their world. Their very lives hanging on by our whims here on the outside. It's kind of unsettling. And honestly, it's a hell of a premise for a movie. Highly recommend TRON 2.0 for an expanded look at that; at the time it was the only real "sequel" to TRON, and it goes all-in. They go into different kinds of computers and shit. It's a blast.

"We did a month of Michael Crichton movies and the algorithm still has a little bit of juice, so here's a full week of Tron nonsense."
