This is why casting directors deserve so much credit for the work they put in. Getting the right lead role can easily make or break a film.

Harron and Bale were the perfect duo for this movie because they both understood how ridiculous it is. The other directors were just so eager to turn Bateman into a sympathetic character, charmer with a dark side, bad boy serial killer. But Harron and Bale understood that Patrick Bateman is nothing but a performance. A scathing satire.

"I played Bateman as if he was envisioning himself in the starring role of his own movie."
"Ultimately, Bateman's great punishment is that no one cares enough to find him out."

Really, those two elements come together to tell you everything about the brilliance behind this. Bale was exactly on the same page as his director in a way that no one else could have been.

Bale continuing to prepare for Bateman as a barely known actor after he was fired and then everyone on set thinking he sucked, obviously taking huge risks with the character and his performances: thats just so fucking inspiring

"At the time, Bale had only done a few minor roles in period dramas." (Shots of him playing the lead in a Steven Spielberg film, the lead in a Disney musical, a main character in a Gillian Armstrong film.)

Good, I'm glad she stood her ground. Her instincts with Bale was spot on.

Baby faced DiCaprio simply wouldn't be able to convey the deep absurdity of this book. I'd imagine it would totally go over his head as he is part of the showbiz that the book takes the piss with
