Douglas Bader was a vile bully. My father served with him in the Battle of Britain. Bader attacked him physically because he refused to allow a flight to take off because the weather made it too dangerous. This wasn’t a new argument, he was perfectly happy to risk the lives of those under him. He conspired against Park with Mallory, the old boy network and made no secret of it to those in the know. A New Zealand squadron served on the same station and they had to be separated from Bader’s Canadians because the Kiwis hated him. The attack was witnessed by the Kiwis and they stopped the Canadians who tried to attack my father for putting Bader on his backside when he’d lunged over the desk at him. But he was never held accountable because my father wasn’t a public school boy The strategy Bader advocated was totally flawed and cost lives. The fact that Park was a Kiwi was a massive element in what happened. The RAF was a class ridden service. Later in the war men from humble backgrounds became officers but they didn’t rise like the public school ranks. So the fantasy remains and the true nature of what happened in the Battle of Britain was known to few. It’s only recently the truth is becoming known.
