Gosh, my dad had a tunnel diode and explained how easy it was to build a transmitter with it and how they were magical. This was nearly 40 years ago. I didn't know they were called Esaki, though.

When I graduated in 1967 in electronics, all graduates were given a book written by the staff of General Electric (USA) and devoted to tunnel diodes - I still have it. Tunnel diodes seemed to have a great future at that time. I made a VHF oscillator much as shown in the video. Tunnel diodes were also used in the trigger circuits of some scopes but failed after some years because (as I understand it) that the doping was so high that diffusion carried on very slowly at room temperature and ultimately the negative resistance characteristic disappeared.

In the Ontic framework, particles aren’t little objects flying around. They’re real wave-like modes in an underlying field.
In the double-slit experiment, the wave really goes through both slits and interferes with itself; the “particle” only appears when it hits the screen and locks onto it.

A tunnel diode is the same physics at a smaller scale: the electron isn’t jumping a barrier, its wave already extends through it, and current flows when states line up.

Interference, tunnelling, and detection are all about wave phase and coupling — not particles choosing paths.

Once, in order to prove the Schrödinger's cat experiment wrong, I put a cat in a box and while inside the cat kept scratching the sides of the box and then I knew he was still alive.

It's amazing to think this scaled up to the point where we have SSD drives with terabytes of storage and each bit is held in place thanks to quantum tunneling! It's also why they eventually lose their data as the charge slowly escapes it's cell because of the same effect. Also amazing he's 100 years old.. must be the magic of eating fish every day :)

Just started electronics last year. I'm 70, it's the most amazing subject I've ever came across, the more you learn the more you understand that you really don't know anything. Love it.

The important phrase is "differential negative resistance" and no laws broken. Good old father Ohm is happy with that. By the way, you can build "differential negative resistance" devices out of e.g. two BJT transistors. If you don't have a Esaki diode at hand ...

Yes, the tunnel diode receiver episode would be great! Great topic, and very well made! thank you!
