"We raised the floor, not the ceiling." That's probably the best summary of human progress I've heard in a while.

As a doctor it’s crazy how quickly we’ve forgotten about infant mortality

The biggest surprise wasn't that people could live into their 70s thousands of years ago—it was realizing that the "30-year lifespan" myth is mostly a story about how many children never got the chance to grow old. That completely changed my perspective.

Human history becomes much more interesting when you realize most of our instincts were shaped by survival problems that no longer exist.

It’s comforting to think we only see ordinary, peaceful memories like a family dinner or the smell of rain in our final minutes. But neurobiology suggests there’s a much darker, evolutionary reason why the brain forces us to unlock the entire archive right before the system shuts down. It's not a nostalgia trip, it's a survival mechanism.

Imagine making it to adulthood being your greatest achievement, not your career. Ancient humans weren't weak, they were surviving challenges most of us will never face. Makes modern life feel very different when you think about it.

As a doctor it’s crazy how quickly we’ve forgotten about infant mortality (or mortality in general).

Basically every time a child dies it’s a huge legal deal, same with women in childbirth, theres always a witch hunt for doctors/nurses, a feeling someone MUST have messed up.

Being born and giving birth is so god damn risky, everyone seems to have entirely forgotten this because most of the time medicine puts the pieces back together.

Really fascinating breakdown of how environmental factors and disease drove those high mortality rates in early populations.

Ancient humans didn't necessarily have bodies that aged faster—they lived in a world filled with constant dangers. Disease, infections, childbirth, accidents, predators, and food shortages claimed many lives early. Those who made it through those risks could sometimes live much longer than most people expect.
