  Fascinating.  Super interesting.  As a point of confirmation, my father was a minister.  He had a copy of Josephus on his bookshelf.  The only time I ever saw it was when he got it out to show my brother the Testimonium.

  Steve Mason is a wonderful scholar and you did a good job in keeping him on point because he has the kind of knowledge that gets in to the weeds pretty deeply if you let him. I don't mean that as a a criticism of him, his thoroughness is why  we love his writing, but it takes someone well informed to ask the right questions for a youtube video like this. Nicely done.

  This is thought-provoking and edifying, thank you for this discussion! I appreciate when you and other scholars engage with the Greek (which is often apologized for), as many of us who are interested in delving more deeply into Biblical and Classical texts prefer to examine the original language used by these authors. Thank you for not being afraid to go deeper and to make easily accessible this interesting academic work!

  Steve Mason is the best Josephus scholar I’ve read. He illustrates the necessity of using critical judgment to understand history.

  On the ‘second Lysanias’ point: there is a well-attested inscription from Abila (Abilene), dated to the reign of Tiberius, that explicitly names ‘Lysanias the tetrarch.’ The inscription is accepted in the standard epigraphic corpora (e.g., SEG) and indicates Luke 3:1 is referring to a later Lysanias, distinct from the Lysanias Josephus says was executed in 34 BCE.
