I’m getting good at reading sheet music now. I’m starting to play pieces without looking at my hands and I’ve only been playing for a year and a half. I really enjoy reading sheet music

Don't give up. It gets easier.

It's not obvious at first, but reading music really is like reading text.

You don't look at the individual letters or even the individual words when you read. You see group of words and your brain instantly knows how they sound. But it wasn't always like that.

When learning to read, you start with individual letters (notes) before you move to words and sentences (note combinations).

Basic example: quarter notes C, D, E, F (or arpeggios where you go up or down one pitch) in that sequence almost always looks the same.

It becomes natural to see those sequences and immediately know what to play.

THere's only one way to get good at reading sheet music --- hard work and discipline. You really have to do it a lot.

Why am I paying a piano teacher weekly, when I can come here and learn more information in less time and have it actually make sense??

Thank you thank you thank you, Matthew, for all of the time and effort you put into your content. If it's saving me from giving up on an instrument I've wanted to play for decades (shhhhh, we don't need to linger on the plural of decade), I'm sure it's saving others as well.

This really is such an underrated channel, and I can't wait for others to find it and get just as inspired.

Perfect video out there for me. I just started playing piano but was strugling a lot on understanding the scales and how chords help but you made it very clear. Thank you

G Clef is also called the treble clef because the bottom of the S part is touching G. The F clef is also called the base clef because the top part with the colon is indicating the F line. They're ways to figure out exactly where you are in the staff.

I'm trying to learn the piano but I've been singing for years. Learning to read notes is a very handy skill to have for all of the musicians in a time crunch. So far, I read music faster than I can play it.

This is the clearest explanation I’ve ever come across. I’ve always wondered what people actually see when they read sheet music. I asked many people, but most just said they’ve been doing it since childhood, so it feels natural to them and they couldn’t really explain. Now I finally understand. Thank you so much! I’m going to give it a try and hope to improve my sight-reading soon! 😊

I remember as a teen being a runner-up in a silver band competition for playing Menuet in G. (also played the acoustic guitar) 30 years on, I have completely forgotten how to read sheet music 😭 Time to re-learn it for the piano, so thanks for the refresher!
