As someone very close to acquiring a Ph.D., i am not surprised in the slightest that some tunnel-dwellers have them. Its a career path I'm considering for myself

I really desperately want to believe that in the nineties there was some edgelord calling himself "dark angel" hanging out in subway tubnels and harrasing homeless people, just because that is completely ridiculous.

"I swear, bro, there are even weirder things deeper underground, literal fish people from Lovecraft live there." is EXACTLY the kind of urban legend that you'd expect to spread among the community of people living in abandoned subway tunnels. Like, as an Eastern European person, this is no different from an 18th century peasant telling his buddies in a pub that he was chased a kikimora while walking home at night.

I used to be homeless years ago, and I agree shelters are often terrible places to be. I always slept outside, and never stayed at the shelter because I preferred it. The cold hard ground was better than the shelter. The thing I realized is that staying in a shelter comes at the cost of your freedom in most cases. If you want people to utilize a service like that it can't have onerous and excessively overbearing limits placed on the group you want to help, it's never going to work. People who are homeless usually need a huge amount of support to get back on track (I know because I've successfully done it), and even then it will never work for everyone. Some people are just that broken, and all you can do is attempt to limit the suffering society imposes on them. I wish more people understood that you can't fix the problem by just shoving people into prison-like shelters. Homelessness isn't the problem, it's the end result of myriad problems, many of which are broad and societal, and there is not an easy fix. A good place to start would be any programs that limit the day to day suffering endured by homeless people. Meal programs, medical care, and harm reduction for addicts are all things that actually make a difference in these people's lives. And obviously affordable housing too, that's really crucial. They are human beings, not vermin. Remember that, they are you.

In my city in Belgium there once was a guy that lived in a family grave on the graveyard. It was kind of like a mini catacomb and people began complaining about smelling fries on the graveyard and they saw lights on in the graveyard during the night. Peoples food got stolen and laundry from the line disappeared.
Eventually police investigated and found it. They guy had dug out some tunnels that connected to other graves and stolen furniture. He had a heater, a kitchen with a frier and even a small library room. He was always making fries in the frier that’s why the graveyard constantly smelled like fries. He tapped electricity off from a nearby factory and the place had lights so he didn’t live in the dark. Really strange story but this video reminded me of it.

Wow, what a powerhouse video and channel! This is like the opposite of clickbait: you start with a simple question and, sticking to facts, you go to a place that’s truly fascinating. Excellent work so far!

My dad works for the MTA. Yes, there are pockets of homeless people living underground for warmth and shelter. He did mention a coffee stand and a food cart in one of them....if you live there you gotta eat too.

There is something very anthropological about dividing people and categorizing others as unhuman or less than human. It happens again and again.

"I'm not a mole person....deeper down they are the real mole people"

I heard the same living in Sydney. "Im not a bogen...further West those are the real bogens"

Its a red flag as a way to justify a lack of empathy for people.
