Georges Lemaître – The Priest Whose Expanding Universe Einstein Rejected Georges Lemaître was a Catholic priest, mathematician, physicist, and one of the most important pioneers of modern cosmology. In 1927, years before the expanding universe became widely accepted, Father Lemaître developed a dynamic model of the universe based on Einstein’s theory of general relativity. He also derived the relationship between the recession velocity and distance of galaxies and calculated an early value for the expansion rate of the universe. When Lemaître presented his ideas to Albert Einstein, Einstein accepted the mathematics but rejected the physical interpretation of an expanding universe. Years later, the scientific picture would change dramatically. Lemaître would go on to develop the idea of the Primeval Atom, an important step toward what later became known as the Big Bang model.
