Living in Switzerland | The Village Built to Survive the End of the World

Living in Switzerland comes with something most visitors never see: hidden beneath homes, apartment buildings, villages, playgrounds, and mountains is an enormous network of civilian shelters and bunkers built to protect the population during a major emergency. Switzerland has more than 370,000 civilian shelters, providing enough shelter capacity for the country's population. For decades, Swiss construction and civil-protection policy has incorporated protected spaces into ordinary life. But why did one of the world's famously neutral countries build so much underground infrastructure? In this documentary, we travel beneath the postcard image of Switzerland to uncover a very different side of Swiss life—one shaped by civil defense, Cold War fears, military strategy, national preparedness, and the belief that protection should already exist before disaster arrives. We begin underneath an ordinary Swiss home, where a reinforced concrete door can lead to a shelter equipped with ventilation designed for emergencies. The Swiss shelter requirement dates back decades, with the script tracing the modern residential requirement to 1963. Then we go deeper. Inside Lucerne's enormous Sonnenberg bunker, infrastructure was once designed around sheltering approximately 20,000 people. The complex included generators, medical facilities, and other infrastructure intended to function during catastrophe. But Switzerland's underground story began long before the Cold War. We'll explore the Swiss National Redoubt, the Alpine fortification strategy centered around St. Maurice, St. Gotthard and Sargans, and the 1940 Guisan Plan for resistance from the Alps. And we'll discover why Switzerland reconsidered its civilian shelter system decades later—only to retain it. In this documentary: • Why Switzerland constructed hundreds of thousands of civilian shelters • What's behind the reinforced doors beneath Swiss homes • How Switzerland's civilian protection system developed • The massive Sonnenberg bunker beneath Lucerne • The Swiss National Redoubt • Switzerland's World War II defensive strategy • The extraordinary infrastructure hidden inside the Alps • Why Swiss shelters survived the end of the Cold War • What people use these shelters for during ordinary life • Bunkers converted into hotels, storage spaces, data centers and other uses • Whether these shelters would actually work during a major crisis • Why preparedness remains part of Swiss life And perhaps the strangest part is what happens to these spaces when the world isn't ending. Some become storage rooms. Others have been adapted for uses ranging from cheese storage and hotels to data infrastructure and even mushroom cultivation. The bunker beneath an ordinary home might spend decades holding skis, suitcases and old furniture. But the reinforced door remains. And that may reveal something much larger about Switzerland. This isn't simply a documentary about bunkers. It's a story about how one country turned preparedness into infrastructure.
