Tonight, fall asleep inside a Victorian house in Bayswater, London, in January 1876, and follow the coal that kept it warm. There was no central heating, only a dozen or so separate grates, and each one was laid by hand before 6 in the morning, at about 20 minutes a grate. The coal came in by weight, tipped through a round iron plate in the pavement barely 12 to 14 inches across, and every ton paid a London duty of 13 pence on the way in. Upstairs, the bedrooms were kept cool on purpose, near 50 degrees by the advice of the day. So how did a family stay warm through a winter night, and who carried that warmth up the stairs?
