I remember news about Kuwaiti freighters hauling oil and iran shooting at them, then putting mines in international waters, then the US sending escorts, etc. This all escalated for a few months. <br><br>We heard about the frigate hitting a mine and went "ohshit this is gonna come out in blood' but didn't know at the time how bad the damage was. We heard about this carrier group moving the day before this happened, and the rest of this story basically the day after it happened. But it didn't make much of an impression because "THIS HAPPENED!!!!" was both the beginning and the end of news about it. There was nothing that came after it. I don't think many people at the time actually believed the thing with the Silkworm missiles was really an accident. It was obviously bullshit, but folks were motivated to NOT follow up with more fighting so it was <b>convenient</b> bullshit and there wasn't much pushback.

I served on that Sammy B from 2009 to 2013. We were very proud of the history. It was the same ship they brout it back and repaired her.
