Remember, UPS is your friend! I rode my old KLR in 2009 from South Mississippi to Inuvik and back. When I left home the bike probably looked like a motorcycle version of the Beverly Hillbillies truck. Second night out I hit a UPS store and shipped about 25 lbs of stuff home. Then just before the Canadian border I shipped another much smaller package home. People all over the world eat, so bringing enough cooking stuff to open a lunch counter is a bad idea! The small non chain restaurants along the way turned out to be a fun part of the trip!

Idk if it’s just the infantryman side of me but 2 pairs of socks is diabolical lol. I’d probably have at least 3-4.

So you're saying my 12 volt fridge and solar panel is a bit over the top. 😆 Maybe the sidecar is too much as well 🤣

Hey Ben, thanks for posting this! I’m on my 16th or 17th BDR right now and wholeheartedly agree with all of your points.

I just rode the Black Hills BDRX, lots of Colorado including the Alpine Loop, Moab, the northern sections of the Utah BDR, Montana BDR, Idaho BDR and now I’m on the NorCal BDR. I left Brooklyn on June 3rd.

Overpacking is a serious issue and if you think like a backpacker it will make those sandy, steep rocky and crazy rutted out sections that much easier and definitely if you have crashes/drops along the way.

After NorCal and swimming in some waterfalls in Yosemite next week for my birthday I’ll be doing Oregon, Washington and British Columbia (forest fires allowing). Maybe I can meet up along the way and say hello!

Most of this crosses into different types of camping. My group learned these lessons hard while backpacking. We always have an overnight shakedown somewhere close before a longer trip.

I have done most of the Oregon BDR on day trips from home or from an RV. Recently started doing quick overnighters to get ready for a “real” BDR trip where I actually camp along the way. Thank you for your videos and the advice 👍🏻.

Hammock camping - when I was a kid we'd just run through the woods for days with layers, tiny packs if a pack at all (cargo shorts lol), and these nylon "stuff" hammocks that basically folded into themselves making a package about the size of a couple decks of cards with belt loop grommets on the part that was folded to the outside so it can just go on a pack strap or whatever; then we'd just run till light died, hang a bed, take a nap till dawn (summer has short nights), get up and keep goin. There are a few brands and weight tiers of nice lie flat hammocks - my back can't do regular ones anymore - insulated inflatable pad keeps your underside toasty and bug net keeps skeeters off; some even convert into a big hanging camp lounge chair. I have one of the biggest/heaviest ones because I am fat and it's only like 12lbs for the whole magilla including tarps, rainfly, bug net, rigging, stakes, and with practice it can be pitched in a few minutes by a single person (no trees? they also use hiking poles if you have to pitch on the ground and everything is scree/scrub). Saves a lot of time when you can just camp wherever you feel like it instead of caring if the ground is level or gonna get wet if it rains etc lol

Your comment on keeping everything compact is spot on. 👍🏻

If you are riding with a buddy or group don’t double pack certain things like tools, saws, etc. Lightweighrt is best but I’m for sure packing more underwear and socks! For shirts and shorts I prefer under armor type of material and the shirts pack up really small. Wool is awesome as well I like the REI brand.

Congratulations, you have progressed to the packing level where backpackers and bike-packers already were many moons ago. And we’ve been laughing at you. 😅 That’s why the lightweight gear was developed in the first place. The only thing left to figure out is a more compact fan; that Fisher Price thing is clunky. 😂

Ben, should have started with your old disruption first.
“Ride to camp, or camp to ride”
That determines how heavy to pack
