Yes. The core game is brilliant, but the community of creative modders continue to give the game eternal life.

I think the reason why the enemy placement and difficulty is way easier in D64 then the previous two games is because it's an N64 game. You're meant to play it with the N64 controller, not mouse and keyboard which make things easier and aiming more accurate. At least that's my theory, I never played D64 using N64 controller

32 years old, countless source ports, a driving community that put out new content on a weekly basis in outstanding quality and shows no signs of slowing down. You just boot the game up and play. No learning complex crap, just you, your gun and your will to survive. No modern bullshit, just as primitive as it gets. Just play and slay. So yeah it holds up excellent.

The reason the super shotgun in Doom64 has less animation to it than the original, is because they had to make some cuts to fit the game on an N64 cartridge, which is the same reason that there are no Arch Viles or Revenants in the game. The first two games, as well as Final Doom were all ported to the Playstation, and featured the same type of ambient soundtrack as Doom 64 and also the same sound effects, giving them a much different atmosphere.

Interestingly enough, The Ultimate Doom actually released after Doom 2. It was the first commercial release of the original game, which before that only consisted of the first three episodes and had to be ordered directly from ID software over the phone. There were actually more than one release of both the original Doom and Doom 2, and featured changes to the engine as well as changes to some of the maps.

31:39 - 33:06

Okay i know doom is usually associated with heavy metal, but it had its atmospheric moments. The Imp Song, Suspense, Dark Halls, Demons on the prey, Signs of evil, The Demons From Adrian's Pen, They're Going To Get You, Sinister, Waltz of the Demons, Nobody Told Me About Id, The Healer Stalks, Coundown To Death, DOOM, In The Dark, Waiting For Romero To Play, Adrian's Asleep, all of these songs (at least on the original midi soundfont and not hulshult's remixes) were pretty laid back or less energetic, sometimes giving an imposing or uneasy feeling. Kind of feels like a moot point considering they are at least...songs, but it isn't heavy metal all the time.

Doom 64's OST was worked on by Aubrey Hodges, who also worked on the ost for the PS1 port of doom which was done by the same team who would do 64. He was brought on mostly because Williams entertainment didn't want to pay Bobby Prince royalties. It was just as atmospheric as 64's ost mostly because he tried to do the whole heavy metal clone of bobby prince's work, but it just wasn't working out because of hardware limitations (he was recording at 5 kilohertz which is laughably bad audio quality), so he was experimenting with the sounds, slowing them down, putting it through some reverb, etc and tried to go for a more immersive horror soundtrack which, in his eyes, was a better outcome than just trying to mimic the rock and metal of the dos games on crappy midi devices that playstation uses. I feel like the same could apply to the N64, sooo...yeah.

Honestly, I will defend Doom 64's ost with my life. Yes, the midi tunes of the dos games are classic, Yes, Mick Gordon's soundtracks are peak, but 64 and even PSX doom's soundscapes are some of the best ambient pieces i've heard...ever, and I cannot imagine playing the game with its darker tone and gloomier colored lighting combined with bobby prince's work. Watch Your Step and In The Void's track, Blood Red Shadows, and Breakdown's track, The Rotted Foul, are easily my favorites in terms of invoking that feeling of unease, and it's easily the best execution of doom's horror elements....I apologize for rambling.

It was the mother demon that redirected demons in Doom 64 and that is the reason they look slightly different because her resurrection process mutated the demons

9:49 Thy Flesh Consumed was made after DOOM II, so it was likely meant for people who alreasy played both games and had the skills to handle the difficulty spike.

People forget... Doom 64 and many 64 games can and should be played with a "rumble pack". It attached to your controller and let's just say when you fired the chaingun.... it's an entirely different experience you FEEL .....

14:29 Idk if this is canon, but I heard somewhere that Daisy was his Emotional Support Animal which explains why he went a little bit insane when she was killed. The demons also kilked his family, but that was added later.

Honestly I'm glad Doom 64 stuck with sprites. The model quality of the N64 wouldn't have been great for a Doom game at that time, most 3D games were very stylized to get away with it, but the visual style D64 was going for wouldn't have worked well with ingame models. The games that were 3D and did look good either made huge sacrifices in one way or another, or came out after '99 and required the expansion pak.
