This movie caused me to have a flashback...not from combat (though I did serve two deployments to Vietnam), but from the taxi notification scenes. I was 13 when my Dad received orders for Vietnam. The last thing he told me before he left was if I see a taxi pull up I was to meet the driver because he had a telegram about his death. I'm an old man now, but I still tear up when watching this movie.

This was the first movie that they fired actual Artillery. I was the only Artillery Forward Observer (MOS 13F) on scene. Since I was on the hill (OP) and not in any scene, I didn't get to wear the era uniforms. They had the nicest, cleanest outhouse I have ever used there, lol. Fun experience.

When Sgt. Major Plumly (Sam Elliot) passed, he was taken to his grave by FIVE GENERAL OFFICERS

When you look at the title "We were Soldiers Once, and Young" it was meant for both sides here.

There needs to be a sequel portraying the events at lz Albany. People who dont read much need to know what those men went through.

I have a signed copy of LTG Moore and Mr. Galloway's book. Had the privilege of meeting them at the Schofield Barracks PX circa 1994. Every bit as much gravitas, perhaps even more in person, than you see on tv when they were interviewed. I told Mr. Galloway that my Dad was a 1st Cav Vietnam Veteran, and he signed the book for my Dad as: "With Respect, Joe Galloway."

One correction, when Hal Moore walked out of the theater he was a retired Lieutenant General.

Sam Elliott’s CSM Plumley reminded me of every Sergeant Major I ever had in the Infantry.

Thank you for starting out with Rick Rescorlas story. Hal Moore wasn’t happy that he was excluded from the movie.

I think it's worth mentioning the song "Sgt. MacKenzie" was written by the great-grandson of the person the song was written about. Joseph Kilna MacKenzie actually thought of his great-grandfather, Charles Stuart MacKenzie in the final moments he had in the first world war. Charles was struck down by a bayonet when defending his friends. 2000 was when the first rendition of the song was released on Joseph's album "Tried and True", and then, two years later, We Were Soldiers recorded it's own version, with Joseph returning to sing it

Great film, and arguably the best war movie ever. However, I had to watch it in sections. I couldn't sit through the whole thing at once. I was in Viet Nam in '68 and the flash backs were a bit intense.
