I did my self-wicking bed differently. I used 4 inch drain pipe as the reservoir. I left areas, with no pipe, where the soil would come in contact with the bottom of the bed as a way for the water to wick up. You can use a pond liner or plastic sheet as a bottom to hold the water in. And drill a hole just above the drain pipe to keep it from over filling. By drilling a hole in the side just above the water line and run a small plasic pipe out you know when the water level is full.

For the soil you need some "garden soil" in there or all of the soil will turn into silt. I also did this in 27 gallon totes and all of my plants have done very well in them for the last 3 years. And I hope to expand my beds further here in the near future.

The raised bed was complicated compared to just planting in the ground. If you bed is outside and there is a heavy rain, the over flow valve will possibly drain out the water if you have not so well draining soil your tomatoes will crack. If they are near ripe, and a heavy rain is predicted, I just pick them, several hours after the rain.

I've spent three summers fighting blossom end rot thinking it was a soil nutrition issue. Every forum said calcium deficiency. Nobody once mentioned water consistency. This video just saved me from buying another bag of lime.
