7 Reasons Japanese Bathrooms Never Get Mold

7 Reasons Japanese Bathrooms Never Get Mold You scrub the corner tile, and two weeks later the black spots are back in exactly the same place. The towels smell faintly of pond water. The mirror is still fogged ten minutes after you left the room, and the fan has been running the whole time. That is not a cleaning problem and it is not a discipline problem. It is a building problem. The fan in your ceiling is rated to turn the air over a few times an hour, half of them are wired to a switch nobody flips, and none of it moves the water sitting on the grout, the ceiling, and the underside of the tub rim. Mold needs moisture sitting still on a surface for hours. Your bathroom hands it both. In Japan the thing in the ceiling is not a fan. It is a small climate unit with a dry cycle that pushes warm moving air through the entire room until the humidity is gone, and the room around it is a molded waterproof shell with a sloped floor and almost no seams. That is why a Japanese bathroom is dry to the touch forty minutes after a shower, and yours is still damp in the morning. Seven ideas. Most of them cost very little, not one of them is a cleaning product, and the seventh is about the places in your bathroom you have never cleaned once because you cannot reach them. In this video you'll learn: The ceiling unit that is not a fan: a heater in winter, cooling in summer, and a dry cycle that drives warm moving air over walls, ceiling, floor and the underside of the tub rim until the room is dry in about forty minutes Why the toilet, the sink and the bath sit in three separate rooms, so the steam from a hot shower never reaches your towels, your paint, your mirror or the toilet paper, and three people use the space at once The unit bath, a bathroom that arrives as molded panels locked into one continuous waterproof capsule, with no drywall to soak, no wood trim to swell, and no cavity behind the tile for water to hide in The floor built with a slope you cannot feel toward a central drain, in textured resin with fine channels molded into it that spread water into a thin sheet, so it is dry to the touch minutes after you finish Why Japanese homes hang the laundry inside the bathroom overnight instead of owning a tumble dryer, and where the several liters of water off a drying rack in your spare room actually end up The seam rule: large, molded panels instead of hundreds of small tiles, and corners coved so the wall curves into the floor, because mold grows in grout lines and silicone beads rather than on flat surfaces Wall-hung toilets with the floor left open underneath, tub aprons that pop off by hand, drain covers and hair catchers that lift out without a tool, and why none of the seven asks you to scrub harder None of this is a stronger chemical or a longer Saturday. It is a room that cannot absorb water, a floor that empties itself, and air that gets dried on a timer, and mold never gets invited in the first place.
