Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R vs Isuzu D-Max X-Rider: Which 4WD Ute should you buy?

I WAS going to buy a Dmax right or wrong but I drove the triton and Hilux to compare and the Dmax was a distant 3rd. I took the Triton and haven't looked back. Like most of these reviews it focuses on stupid little things and missed or glossed over the big points. Warranty, Super select, better environmental numbers, better economy, better load carrying and and Mitsubishi actually have a better legacy of reliability on the whole (having owned many of both over the years).

Triton all day everyday, the best bang for buck 4WD on the market today, one of the best traction control systems on the industry, just have to use the drive modes, rock mode the best.

Can't go wrong with both. But, Mitsubishi Super Select is the best in this class. Dmax and Hilux don't have 4wd for sealed surface

So the Triton is a couple of grand cheaper, comes with a 10 year warranty, has advanced on tarmac 4wd capability and active yaw control, 360 degree camera, leather steering wheel, tyre pressure monitor, 10% better fuel economy, far more modern interior, Euro 6 compliant emissions, etc and still loses, go figure

I don't get the current obsession with 'soft touch' materials on doors and dash etc for utes. I like my ute trim to be as hard and tough as possible thank you very much.

Well I own a Ranger Wildtrak 2021 and now buying a Triton, think it looks mean and the goods…. Once I drove it… I was sold on it…. From a safety perspective the Triton selective gearing is absolute genius… switch to all wheel drive when needed. Secondly, having the Mitsubishi Industries behind it is a great sell and why the 10 years warranty it bloody brilliant.

I respect this blokes opinion however I reckon he was wrong here, the Triton is a better Ute. Super select 2, bigger payload, more power, 10yr warranty and a newer design. Looks are subjective which is fine but the Triton wins this.

kept the continuity across shooting days with the outfit... gave it away a bit with the watch... kudos though, both very nice😉🤙

    Spot on with the review.
My friend owns a Dmax Xterrain.
you could feel the imperfections on gravel and unsettled roads
steering is super light . as good as my golf.
that stereo is worse than my decade old Xtrail.
and yes engine is audible if you floor it.

Quick note, the car came with bridgestone tyres which made the imperfections more pronounced on unsettled roads. Once the tyres was changed to kumho, the ride became way more comfortable.

Hmmm. So i have the Triton. I got a demo GSR (70km on the clock) for the same price as vehicle tested here, so certainly have none of the concerns you have mentioned about interior quality, it's pretty nice!
I didn't like the overly soft suspension on mine (gls and gsr have comfort springs) so upgraded it.
You're right about the Driver Monitor. I pulled out the cable.
The car is by no means perfect, but for what i paid im pretty happy.
So why didn't i even consider the D-max? The old fashioned 4wd system. Of these two, only the Triton has on road AWD option, driving the dmax on gravel in 4H, as you did in this video, actually risked damaging the car. I am really, really surprised this feature was not mentioned in the review (you spoke about drive modes, but not the same thing). Knowing how scittish an unladen ute can be on a wet bitumen road in 2H, this is a huge safety consideration and it is a shame the opportunity wasn't taken to share this knowledge with viewers. I also found it unusual that the dmax was referred to by name throughout, whilst the Triton was regularly referred to as "this thing", it may not have been deliberate but sounds passively derogatory.

And i forgot to mention, the Triton is the only one that offers a separate auxiliary transmission cooler too, the DMax? It doesn't have one and the rest of the UTE's in the class

There is one thing on the Dmax, it's opening and closing the doors and tailgate. It feels light and when closing,it sounds like an empty can. Don't know if it's a question of no sound insulation, or perhaps thinner body sheet metal. Actually it is a good vehicle. The new Triton, haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet, so can't comment. Looks the part although the front lost its Dynamic Shield, just flat upright, not what one could call good looking. It does sound like a big improvement over its predecessor.
