Everyone knows Albert the Good. Almost no one knows the man his widow edited. For forty years after Prince Albert died, hot water was carried each morning into the room at Windsor where he had died, as though he might still want to shave. It is the most famous act of love in the history of the British crown — and it was also a lid, laid very carefully over a harder story. The legend gave us the faithful husband, the devoted father of nine, the visionary of the Great Exhibition, the earnest German who taught a scandal-soaked royal family how to behave. Much of it was true. His intelligence was real, his industry extraordinary, and his love for Victoria — and hers for him — beyond doubt. But within three months of his wedding he complained that he was "only the husband, not the master in the house" — and within six years a diarist at the heart of government wrote that he was "King to all intents and purposes." He drove from the palace the governess who had raised the Queen. He answered his wife's storms of misery with written notes about her self-control. He designed an education for his eldest son so relentless that the boy, by one friend's account, grew up afraid of him, and he sent his favourite daughter to Prussia as the instrument of a political dream. In the winter of 1854 a false rumour ran through England that he had been arrested for treason and taken to the Tower. And beneath all of it was a small boy in a German castle whose mother was sent away when he was five — and who never saw her again. Albert's achievements — the Great Exhibition, South Kensington, his work for science, education and the reform of the royal household — are real and are honoured here. Quotations come from the published letters and journals of Queen Victoria, Albert's own letters and notes, and the diary of Charles Greville; anecdotes that survive only at second hand are flagged as such. The cause of Albert's death was recorded as typhoid fever; modern alternative diagnoses are presented only as theories. Nellie Clifden is treated with dignity, as a young woman about whom almost nothing is known beyond the scandal attached to her name. The "cane" and other disputed details of Bertie's education are given as contested. Nothing here is a verdict of villainy on a good and faithful man — it is the honest distance between the legend and the record.
